A classic mistake is installing a standard roof skylight and assuming its total cut-out size (e.g. 40x40 cm = 1,600 cm²) counts as your high-level ventilation. This is incorrect! Gas Safe engineers only consider the permanent free airflow area—the air that passes through when the skylight is completely shut. Roof vent manufacturers (Dometic, Fiamma, Maxxfan) always state this precise figure in their technical manuals (typically between 80 cm² and 150 cm²). What is a permanent vent in a campervan?
A permanent vent is an opening to the outside that cannot be closed, blocked, or shut by the user under any circumstances. A standard skylight or opening window does not count as permanent ventilation unless it features a built-in, non-closeable airflow system (often referred to as "fixed ventilation" or "permanent free airflow") certified by the manufacturer.
How do I calculate the vehicle area for the BS EN 721 standard?
You must use the overall exterior dimensions of the vehicle (Length × Width), which can usually be found on the manufacturer's spec sheet. You do not just calculate the rear living space footprint; you must calculate the total projected ground area of the entire van.
Where should I place the low-level vent in my van?
